Des Sourcils

Le Club Chaud

Original instrumental compositions presented in the gypsy swing tradition. Le Club Chaud evokes by its name and its approach the years of the Hot Club de France Quintet of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli with the modern touch that characterizes them. You will have the pleasure of hearing Mathias Berry (guitar), Antoine Angers (guitar), Alexis Taillon-Pellerin (double bass) and Sylvain Neault on violin.

BIOGRAPHY

Des Sourcils gypsy jazz trio was founded in 2012 around Django Reinhardt’s interpretation of the russian traditional song Dark Eyes (Otchi Tchernye). Mathias Berry, Antoine Angers and Alexis Taillon-Pellerin came together to present their own arrangement of the song, replaying Reinhardt’s legendary solo in its entirety. Their dynamic arrangement showed the trio’s real color and, full of passion for this style and its possibilities, the three musicians began developing their repertoire, adding jazz standard to Reinhardt’s classics as well as pieces from contemporary gypsy jazz musicians such as Angelo Debarre, Bireli Lagrène, Stéphane Wrembel and the Rosenberg Trio. Quickly, Des Sourcils began to add their own compositions to their shows. In july 2014, five of these were recorded on a self-titled and self-produced EP. In 2018, Des Sourcils released its first full length album, Baignades, featuring many great musicians such as Stéphane Wrembel (guitar), François Rioux (guitar), Denis Plante (bandonéon), Olivier Bussières (percussions) and Sylvain Neault (violin). Since then, the group performed more than 200 times in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, as well as in parts of the United States (New York, Brooklyn, Rochester). In 2020, the band changed their approach to try and bridge the gap between their music and the real gypsy jazz roots. From there came an album seated in tradition, on which compositions go from the old swing feel to gypsy bossas, sometimes even touching the impressionist side of Django’s music. Once again, François Rioux and Sylvain Neault assisted Des Sourcils in achieving the sound it was looking for. Improvisation being the core of the present approach, this album was partly created live at the Sainte-Angèle jazz bar where the band used to play every week for their own jazz nights named Club Show. It goes without saying that the name of the trio’s most recent work should carry the name of the nights during which it was manifested ; Des Sourcils presents Club Chaud, released in june 2022.
